Armed Forces Day is an annual event celebrated in late June to commemorate the service of men and women in the British Armed Forces. Once known as Veterans Day, the name was changed in 2009 and is celebrated on the last Saturday of the month.
The main purpose of Armed Forces Weekend is to draw attention to the nation’s servicemen and women. Many of whom need support with health, welfare and mental health after leaving the forces. For some, the transition into civilian life can be too much to bear and therefore receiving the right support is vital. For others, years of service has taken its toll and many service personnel have sustained life changing injuries or disabilities through war.
This weekend gives us the chance to honour our servicemen and women both past and present. These brave people deserve our full support and respect and what better way than to line the streets, wave a British flag and help raise money for those much needed charities in the process.

Being ex-military myself, I believe weekends such as this, are vital for bringing civilians and our troops together. The British people need to be behind our servicemen and women one hundred percent and our armed forces need to know that they have our utmost support.
Visiting Cleethorpes for the weekend, I was met with scores of ex-serving personnel who wore their medals with pride whilst the younger generation watched them in awe. You could see the patriotism shining in the veteran’s eyes, proud to have served their country whilst the younger serving members stood tall by their side.
For many, this is a chance to show others that they are not just Joe Blogs. For them it is a day to remind the world of their honourable achievements. They also wish to acknowledge the fact that they have been part of an elite organisation which they will remember for the rest of their lives, a family from whom they will never be parted.
The Armed Forces are a group of incredible people. They would die for their country, help anyone in distress and risk their lives to support other countries.
Britain’s Armed Forces are still the best in the world, we should all be very proud of the work they do which is why your support is so important. These people are human beings with husbands, wives, partners and families. Some of them will witness atrocities, suffer terrible injuries at great cost to themselves, just to keep you and your loved ones safe from harm.
Armed Forces Parade At Cleethorpes
On Saturday 27th June, Lord Howe announced to the crowds that Cleethorpes had been given the honour of hosting the official Armed Forces Day for 2016.
Later the same day it was reported in ‘The Grimsby Telegraph,’ that former Mayor Alex Baxter, who sits on the Armed Forces Day committee, said: “It was a superb parade but it is the people that make it what it is, from the cadets to the service men and women and the people and families who have come out in force.
Cleethorpes showed their support with two whole days of celebrations which included a military parade, hot air balloons, fireworks and a fantastic Military Air Display (MAD), which featured appearances by the Vulcan, Spitfire and Hurricane.

I agree with you Lynette, my brother Lenny, who is no longer with us, did 22yrs in the Army, mostly in Germany, but he was lucky had a great family, but not all have, its a pity the government don’t look after the soldiers, like the Navy is looked after. I hope everything goes well xx
I think it’s time the Government took stock of their responsibility to these people Rose. Anyone who is injured doing their duty for their country should be looked after for the rest of their lives. Xx
