Now that we’d found our feet after our visit to Ullswater, we decided to go a little further afield, and you can’t get much further than Scotland. To break up the journey, our first stop was Hoddom Castle.

After a few hours on the road, we rolled into the site, and what a beautiful approach it was. As you cross a little bridge over the river, turn immediately right and follow the leafy lane that winds gently toward the grounds. The river runs steeply down to your right, glinting through the trees, and it’s one of those drives that makes you slow down just to take it all in.

Arrival and First Impressions

The reception staff were warm and welcoming, which gave us a great start. The first thing you notice is the castle itself, standing proudly in the grounds. Although much of it is in ruins, part of the building is still in use as a reception area and restaurant, which gives the place a wonderful old-world atmosphere.

Facilities

A quick note for fellow travellers: there’s no water on the pitches, only electric hook-up. We had to fill up at the water point around the back of the castle, which is also where you’ll find the chemical sluice. It’s not far to walk, and honestly, filling your tank beside a castle is quite an experience.

The shower block, located by reception, was clean and the water hot, but it could definitely do with a refurbishment. My top tip is to bring your flip-flops. The floors get wet and it will make your shower visit much easier.

Directions: From Ellon, take the B999 towards Tarves. Follow the signs for Haddom Castle and, after crossing the small bridge, turn immediately right. The entrance is down the leafy lane on your right-hand side.

Dining and Dog-Friendly Fun

We were delighted to discover that the castle restaurant is dog-friendly, which meant our little dachshund, Albi, could join us for dinner. We ordered the BBQ chicken loaded fries, and they were delicious with a really generous portion too. The staff were super friendly and even came over to fuss over Albi, which absolutely made his evening.

Walks and Surroundings

After dinner, we took Albi for a wander. There’s a dedicated dog-walking area, and you can also head down to the river for a peaceful stroll. The surroundings are lovely, tranquil and green, and just what you need after a day on the road. Albi thoroughly enjoyed his walk and gives Hoddom Castle four paws out of five for an overnight stop.

If you’re into golf or fishing, you’ll find both on-site, and there’s also a play park for children.

Final Thoughts

We found Hoddom Castle a perfect stopover, peaceful, scenic, and great for anyone travelling north or south who wants to break up their journey. Between the historic setting, the friendly staff, and the dog-friendly touches, it’s a site full of character and charm.

Would we stay again? Absolutely. Especially for a night or two of castle views and great walks.
